PRESIDENT AND OWNER

Iam
Dave Ashton ...

I am a hockey dad of two boys.
I am a husband.
I think family comes first.

I believe that if you work hard you can be rewarded.

After 20 years in the news media business, working my way up from typing in scores for the back of the sports section to a position that helped shape the direction of the company, I have decided to start Tallships Media.

The reasons are many and they revolve around family and the positives of owning your own business.

Like many of you, I understand the amount of commitment to customers it takes to make a business a success.

CAREER AS A GRAPHIC ARTIST

I am
A DESIGNER ...

I learned from some of the best page editors and graphic artists in the media business until I developed the skills to become a recognized designer in my own right.

I have redesigned several newspapers and magazines and built a few from scratch. I have developed and taught internal courses on how to package and display content effectively.

I understand how digital audiences  respond to material posted online.

My experience of running a major news organization's coverage of eight Olympics through the birth of social media has shown me the best ways to effectively target audiences using those platforms.

I can put the same skills and passion into helping your business tell your story.

CAREER AS A WRITER

I am
A STORYTELLER ...

Coming up with a unique way to tell a story is my passion. Delivering a message that meets the needs of the story subject and wants of its audience is my profession.

I have written the cover story for the inaugural edition of Chill magazine as well as stories for several other editions. I have contributed to other magazines and produced multiple articles for the Toronto Sun Sports and Travel sections.

I have created dozens of manuals and documentation for internal and external projects. I worked as a speech writer for the Ontario government. I have helped people market their business.

Now I want to tell your story using the skills I have learned in newsrooms and boardrooms across Canada ...

CAREER AS A PROJECT MANAGER

I am A
COMMUNICATOR ...

During my 20-year career in the news media business, I was tasked with managing numerous large projects, often at the same time. Along with generating the ideas on which these projects were based, I oversaw the planning, tracking and implementation of all aspects of these projects, including the creation and managing of a 25-seat pagination centre.

Having the ability to communicate ideas well to others is a skill I take the most pride in, whether it be at work, at home or volunteering on the ice. I have experience in various forms of training techniques — the creation of documentation, teaching in a classroom, a train-the-trainer approach or one-on-one coaching.

Learning and communicating continue to be my top priorities.
